105 Receive Degrees in Fall Diploma Ceremony
On December 20, 2006, approximately 1,000 relatives and guests watched in pride as 105 degrees were conferred by the department during our Fall Diploma Ceremony held in the beautiful Meymandi Concert Hall at the Progress Energy Center for Performing Arts in downtown Raleigh.
The graduating class included 10 PhDs, 54 MS degrees, and 41 BS degrees, expanding the department’s alumni base to over 5,000.
As a sign of the strengthening economy and job market for computer science graduates, more than 75% of the undergraduates have firm job offers in hand, with many of our students receiving multiple offers. The list of new grad employers is a “who’s who” list including IBM, SAS, Cisco Systems, NetApp, Nortel Networks, Google, Verizon, Lockheed Martin, Credit Suisse, Red Hat and Sprint Nextel.
The graduating class included three University Scholars, one Parks Scholar, and numerous members of a variety of scholastic honor societies.
Dr. Mladen Vouk, newly appointed department head, congratulated the graduates on their accomplishments. He reminded the graduates that the department will celebrate its 40th year in 2007, and he encouraged each to come back to campus to join in the celebratory events.
Steve Worth, Technical Director, SPO Global Engineering with EMC Corporation, provided the keynote address. As an alum, previous adjunct faculty member, successful executive, and current chair of the department’s Strategic Advisory Board, Worth offered the graduates three insightful “truths” from his life journey:
- Change is constant, but only the prepared can leverage change.
- There is no substitute for critical thinking.
- Relationships are not optional.
Worth concluded by encouraging the graduates to help others during their life journey, and in particular, to help the future generations of NC State students with their gifts and their active engagement as alumni of NC State University.
Special entertainment was provided by local musician, Brent Hubbell.
Special thanks to Super ePartner, Progress Energy, for their sponsorship of this very memorable event.
