Shamyla Lando

Dozens of students, faculty, staff and corporate partners packed EB2 1231 on February 13 for the Spring 2025 “Leadership in Technology” Speaker Series talk, featuring Shamyla Lando, CTO and SVP of Labcorp. Lando focused her talk on the importance of data and the growing implementation of artificial intelligence in the healthcare industry.

“There is so much information out there now,” said Lando in her talk. “It is hard for clinicians and physicians to stay abreast of it… Every 26 seconds, there’s a medical article published. So there’s so much information out there that you can’t really process it or keep it. We’ll need AI to help us.”

From assisting in note-taking and operational tasks to the creation of digital twins and more, artificial intelligence and large language models can be game changers in the medical field, especially for a company like Labcorp.

“We want to be the leaders with AI, but we also have to manage expense, reliability, safety and ethics,” said Lando. “And we can take certain approaches, such as deploying responsible AI frameworks and keeping the human in the loop.”

Her final takeaway? “Start small, think big, move fast. I love doing that. And then closely monitor the outcome. That is very critical,” said Lando. “In the end, we have to keep in mind, we need AI in healthcare… We talked about how there’s so much information out there, we talked about all the impact it’s making. And we need change in healthcare. If we keep doing the same thing, the output will not be different."
