Does Gender Influence Risk for Alzheimer’s Disease?

Dr. Nagiza Samatova, professor of computer science at NC State University, has been awarded $16,226 in supplemental funding by Duke University to support her research proposal entitled “Gender Differences in the Risk for Alzheimer’s Disease in ADNI-1 MCI.”  Total funding for the project is now $61,226.

The award will run from January 1, 2016 through May 16, 2017.

Abstract – The project will examine gender differences in cognition of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) subjects using longitudinal analysis. We hypothesize that women in MCI diagnostic group may progress at a faster rate in cognitive decline and hippocampal atrophy than men in relation to AD biomarkers. To test the hypothesis, pooled ADNI1-1 and ADNI-2 data will be utilized.
