Summer Grad Student Seminar Hosted by Computer Science

The computer science department at North Carolina State University's College of Engineering this summer hosted a graduate student seminar. It featured research presentations by nearly a dozen visiting international scholars working with faculty throughout NC State -- including one in the computer science department.

Yuji Matsuoka, a graduate student from Tokyo University, spent the summer working on Markov chain problems with Dr. William Stewart, professor of computer science.

Matsuoka and his summer colleagues were at NC State through an exchange arranged by the NC State chapter of IAESTE, an international student exchange program. Two computer science undergraduate students worked abroad this summer through the same program. [See related article.]

Matsuoka says he learned of the international opportunity from his professor at Tokyo University, who himself had participated in a similar program while a graduate student. Matsuoka says he chose NC State's computer science department because of the opportunity to work on a project related to his graduate studies in Japan, in mathematical informatics. He also said he appreciated the opportunity to practice his English while at NC State.

In addition to presentations by the international students, Ashok Mallya, an NC State computer science doctoral student, gave a presentation on his dissertation research. He is working with Dr. Munindar Singh, professor of computer science.

The summer graduate research seminar was coordinated by Kera Bell, a computer science doctoral student.
