Heckman Recognized for Excellence in Teaching
Congratulations to Dr. Sarah Heckman, teaching assistant professor in the Computer Science Department at NC State, for being selected as a recipient of the Outstanding Teacher Award from the College of Engineering. Heckman is being recognized for her creative and innovative teaching and learning practices.Heckman, who joined the department in 2009, was the first teaching assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science. She is a three-time graduate of the Computer Science Department, earning her B.S. (2004), Master’s (2005), and Phd (2009) in computer science from NC State. She teaches several of the core classes in software engineering and programming languages in addition to being the faculty advisor for the student chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery/Association of Information Technology Professionals (ACM/AITP). Her research interest is in computer science education and software engineering, specifically transfer of software engineering best practices like test-driven development, static analysis, and continuous integration from the classroom to practice.
Upon being selected as an Outstanding Teacher, recipients become members of the Academy of Outstanding Teachers for as long as they are NC State faculty. Recognition is given at several university events including commencement, Celebration of Academic Excellence, and the Teaching and Learning Symposium.
Heckman and other Outstanding Teacher Award recipients will be honored at an awards luncheon and ceremony at the McKimmon Center on April 14, 2015. Recipients of the Board of Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor Award, and the Gertrude Cox Award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching and Learning with Technology will also be recognized.
