IBM Supports Department with Faculty Awards, Equipment

The NC State Department of Computer Science is very proud to announce that five members of its faculty have been selected to receive 2013 IBM Faculty Awards totaling over $130,000.  Winners of these highly competitive and selective awards include:
 
Dr. Rada Chirkova – associate professor of computer science, with an award of $10,000
Dr. Vince Freeh – associate professor of computer science, with an award of $35,000
Mr. John Streck – director of Institute of Next Generation IT Systems (ITng), with an award of $35,000
Dr. David Thuente - professor of computer science, with an award of $10,000
Dr. Mladen Vouk - professor of computer science and department head, with an award of $40,000
 
Other winners from the College of Engineering include Dr. Hamid Krim,professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, who also received an award of$10,000.
 
IBM Faculty Awards recognize outstanding faculty achievement and are renewable annually. But in keeping with the competitive spirit of the program, renewal nominations must be submitted and supported by an IBM technical sponsor and evaluated in the same process and criteria as the first award.
 
Additionally, IBM has made a major donation of storage related equipment and support valued at approximately $150,000.  The equipment will be integrated into the ITng labs and used by Dr. Vince Freeh to support his research and teaching efforts to design and test novel storage solutions for high throughput Hadoop and other cloud applications.
