Departmental Research Grants, Gifts, and Support (8/29/2003)
Corporate Friend Microsoft has provided the department two tablet PCs, two Pocket PCs, and related peripheral equipment and software valued at approximately $4,028.54. The equipment will support eCommerce & gaming research and teaching programs this fall. Special thanks to Ernie Aguayo and Media Arts & Images, of Matthews, NC, for providing the video production for our award winning Diet Download project team's presentation in the IEEE Computer Society International Design Competition (CSIDC) World Finals held in Washington, DC earlier this summer. The writing, filming and editing work was valued at over $4,240, and the finished product certainly helped the team achieve great success with a third place finish in the competition! Dr. Carla Savage's proposal entitled "Enumeration and Structure in Families of Partitions" has been funded by the National Science Foundation for $183,287. The project period is 7/15/03 - 6/30/06. Drs. Laurie Williams' and Mladen Vouk's proposal entitled "ITWF: Collaboration through Agile Software Development Practices: A Means for Improvement in Quality and Retention of IT Workers" has been funded by the NSF for $687,859 for the period July 15, 2003 through June 30, 2006. Dennis Kekas', and Drs. Rudra Dutta's and Mihail Sichitiu's (ECE) proposal entitled "NCSU TIE: Wireless Sensor Networks for Structural Health Monitoring of Buildings and Bridges" has been funded by the NSF for $200,000 beginning 8/13/03 for two years. The proposal was submitted concurrently with the RB2C, an NSF Center located in Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at NC State. As reported by NCSU Engineering News, Dr. Rada Chirkova, recently received a Faculty Award for $40,000 through the IBM University Partnership Program. The IBM Faculty Awards are competitive, cash-only awards that are intended to foster collaboration between researchers at leading universities worldwide and those in IBM research, development and services organizations and to promote courseware and curriculum development to stimulate growth in disciplines and geographies that are strategic to IBM. Faculty Awards are granted annually on a global basis. Candidates must have an outstanding reputation for contributions in their field or, in the case of junior faculty, show unusual promise. Chirkova received a matched award, in which corporate University Relations provided $20,000, and Research Triangle Park Center for Advanced Studies (http://cas.ibm.com/raleigh/) provided the other $20,000. Dr. Annie Antón's proposal entitled "Transnational Digital Government: Specifying Software Requirements and Policy for Compliance" has been funded by the NSF in its Digital Government Initiative for $81,400 for two years. Drs. George Rouskas', Rudra Dutta's, and Carla Savage's proposal entitled "A Formal Approach to Traffic Grooming in Optical Networks with General Topologies" has been funded by the NSF for $405,000 for three years beginning this fall. Drs Laurie Williams' and Mladen Vouk's proposal entitled "Extending Extreme Programming" has been funded as a subcontract from the NSA for $47,893. The project began the first of this month and runs through May 15, 2004.

Cisco Hires New Grads to Support Field Sales (8/29/2003)
Great news for some of our new grads! Super ePartner, Cisco Systems recently completed an aggressive new grad hiring initiative focused on bringing in 50 new Associate Systems Engineers and Associate Inside Sales Reps. We are very pleased to announce that Cisco hired 10 students from NC State for this special program, more than from any other school. This select group will undergo 12 months of specialized training in the RTP area before being relocated to field sales assignments.

Priority 'Naming Rights' for ePartners (7/25/2003)
The official groundbreaking ceremony for our new 100,000 sq. ft, $41M state-of-the-art teaching and research facility on Centennial Campus is tentatively planned for October 24th. At the same time, we plan to launch the official Naming Rights Campaign. While the details of this campaign are still being finalized, we expect naming opportunities to range from $25,000 to over $1M. Premiere naming spaces include an expansive atrium and a series of terraces designed to host events of all sizes, as well as labs, classrooms, conference rooms, and faculty offices. Our ePartners will have priority naming rights opportunities. Faculty/Staff Promotions & Honors (8/29/2003)
Congratulations to Dr. Peng Ning and doctoral student, Kun Sun for receiving the best paper award (and accompanying plaque) in the IEEE Information Assurance Workshop at West Point held in June. Their paper "How to Misuse AODV: A Case Study of Insider Attacks against Mobile Ad-hoc Routing Protocols" was judged the most representative of innovative research built on sound methodologies and substantiated conclusions. The paper was chosen over 67 other submissions.

New Faculty/Staff Member Announcements (8/29/2003)
With the start of a new academic year, we are proud to officially welcome the seven new faculty members who have joined us since last fall. Pictured at left on the back row (L to R); Stefen Heber, Vince Freeh, Jaewoo Kang, and Ting Yu, and on the front row; Jun Xu, Xiaosong Ma, and Karl Branting. We are also pleased to welcome Virginia (Ginny) Adams, who joined our staff on August 1st. Ginny serves as our People Support Specialist and works in the Main Office in 226 Withers Hall. She graduated from NCSU this past May with a BS in Animal Science and Agricultural Business Management. While attending NCSU, she also worked at CALS in Academic Programs assisting students, faculty and staff
