Scholarship Endowment Honors Dr. Carl C. Hughes

Drs Barbara & Carl HughesThe Department of Computer Science at NC State University is pleased to announce the creation of the Dr. Carl C. Hughes Scholarship Endowment honoring the NCSU alum and life-long academician. This endowment is established by Dr Carl C. Hughes’ wife of fifty-one years, Dr. Barbara Ann Hughes, as a way to honor the life and legacy of this career educator who passed away on October 16, 2013. This endowment will support a needs-based scholarship that will be awarded annually to a qualified computer science student from an underrepresented class who is pursuing a dual major in computer science and applied mathematics or similar degree. more

Tanwir & Perros Release New Book

Savera Tanwir Congratulations to NC State CSC PhD student, Savera Tanwir, and her advisor and Alumni Distinguished Graduate Professor, Dr. Harry Perros, for having their book entitled “VBR Video Traffic Models,” published by Wiley. In the book, the authors evaluate different models and present the results, benefiting those in the field of video analysis & modeling, as well as network engineers looking to generate synthetic video traffic to benchmark their network. more

New Technique Targets C Code to Spot, Contain Malware Attacks

Researchers from NC State University, including Drs. Helen Gu and Will Enck, have developed a new tool to detect and contain malware that attempts root exploits in Android devices. The tool improves on previous techniques by targeting code written in the C programming language – which is often used to create root exploit malware, whereas the bulk of Android applications are written in Java. more

Morrison Wins IBM Ph.D. Fellowship

Congratulations to Patrick Morrison, a Ph.D. student in the computer science department at NC State University, who was recently awarded a prestigious 2014 IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Award. Award recipients are selected based on their overall potential for research excellence, the degree to which their technical interests align with those of IBM, and their progress to-date, as evidenced by publications and endorsements from their faculty advisor and department head. more

White House Honors Kevin Clark as Champion of Change

Top 25!Sometimes, it turns out, a baseball field can be too perfect. Or so CSC alum, Kevin Clark found out when he tried to help a group of African-American and Latino students at at an inner-city school in Washington, D.C., learn math and science by playing educational video games. Clark’s larger effort to attract a more diverse group of students to the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) disciplines, was recognized recently by the White House when he was named a Champion of Change. more

Local Engineering Prominence Lures National Engineering Forum to Region

In Raleigh on the evening of March 26th, the National Engineering Forum (NEF), along with North Carolina State University and Duke University, hosted a regional dialogue aimed at finding solutions to the top challenges facing American engineering. The dialogue brought together executive-level representatives from industry, academia, and government to discuss challenges facing America’s engineering enterprisep. more

April 12 Event Will Put Drone Skills to the Test

Unmanned aerial vehicles, widely known as UAVs or drones, are no longer exclusively military tools. Drones now have domestic uses for local governments, colleges and universities and private companies. The Institute of Next Generation IT Systems in the Department of Computer Science at North Carolina State University is hosting a drone programming challenge culminating on April 12 with a goal of raising awareness of these platforms and increasing participation in drone-related activities. more

Video Game Design Program at NC State in Top 25 Again

Top 25!The Video Game Design Program at NC State has been recognized as one of the “Top 25 Undergraduate Schools to Study Game Design for 2014.” NC State ranks 23rd on The Princeton Review’s fifth annual list which salutes the best schools in the U.S. and Canada. This is the fourth consecutive year that NC State’s program has been recognized. more

The Hunt Library captured this year’s Stanford Prize for Innovation in Research Libraries, a new but prestigious award that recognizes the facility’s creative integration of powerful technologies and inspiring design. more

Dr. Rudra Dutta has been awarded $291,956 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support his research proposal entitled “Service Offering Model and Versatile Network Resource Grooming for Optical Packet and Circuit Integrated Networks.” more

Dr. Blair Sullivan has been awarded $30,000 by the National Consortium for Data Science (UNC-Chapel Hill) to support her research proposal entitled “Tracking Community Evolution in Dynamic Graph Data Using Tree-Like Structure.” more

If you are a CSC student or recent graduate (within 12 months post-graduation) and would like to receive email notifications when new jobs are posted on ePack matching your profile, you can set up your own customized job search agent to receive just the postings you desire (intern vs. full time, etc). The Alumni Association has partnered with the University Career Development Center to make ePACK available to NC State alumni. If you are a current Alumni Association member, update your online profile by visiting the Wolfpack Connect (alumni directory) and click on the ‘Update My Info’ tab on the upper right side of the page. Select the ‘Career Connections’ tab and then choose ‘yes’ beside the question, ‘Do you want access to ePACK?’

To access ePACK you must be a member of the Alumni Association and you must be an alumnus/alumnae of NC State. If you are not a member of the Alumni Association, you can join online. Once you have received an email confirming your membership, you will be able to register for access to ePACK.
