Departmental Research Grants, Gifts, and Support Northrop Grumman and the NC Office of the State Auditor have provided the department donations of $5,000 each in support of the department's Senior Design Center program. Corporate Friend, the Council for Entrepreneurial Development (CED) recently made a gift-in-kind donation to the department valued at $1,200. The department has received a substantial deferred gift pledge from alumna, Leslie Lewis (BS '87) in support of the Joyce Hatch Scholarship Endowment. To date, approximately 55 donors have donated almost $17,000 and pledged almost $37,000 to the new scholarship endowment. More Dr. S. Purushothaman Iyer has been awarded $20,000 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) in support of his proposal titled "Forensic Analysis of Medical Devices". The award will run from August 1st, 2006 through July 31st , 2007. NC State and SAS to Collaborate on Data Analytics Education Chancellor James Oblinger and SAS CEO, Jim Goodnight, recently announced an initiative to create a new graduate degree program in the rapidly expanding field of data analytics. The new Analytics Initiative - led by Dr. Michael Rappa, Alan T. Dickson Distinguished University Professor - proposes an intensive one-year professional master's degree that will give students an understanding of analytical concepts and hands-on experience with the same powerful tools used in industry today. The degree program will be organized as part of the proposed Institute for Advanced Analytics, to be located on NC State's Centennial Campus. More Oval Drive Parking Now Open Parking spaces on Oval Drive (directly in front of EBII) are now available, and zoned by the university for employee parking and requires display of a valid "C" parking permit (except for "SV" spaces as marked). Effective July 31st, vehicles must display a valid permit to avoid ticketing during hours of enforcement (7 am - 5 pm). Fall Recruiting Events Corporate recruiters are advised to reserve the following
calendar dates for important recruiting events at NC State: Oct 2 - Minority Career Fair - 1-7 PM in Reynolds
Coliseum. This is the only non-college specific career fair on campus
and one of the largest! Last year, more than 125 companies and over 2,000
students participated. Companies are advised to register early to reserve
a spot (link) Oct 3 - Engineering Career Fair - 9:30 am - 4:00
PM in the McKimmon Center. This is one of the largest career fairs in
the country held specifically for engineering students. More than 180
companies and almost 2,100 engineering students participated in this
fair last spring. Corporate registration is capped due to space limitations,
and more than 30 companies were turned away last fall. Early registration
for this event is a must! (link)
NOTE - Due to incredible demand and corporate requests, this popular
recruiting event historically held in the spring, will now be held in
both the fall and spring. If you plan to participate in both, the spring
date will be February 1, 2007. Oct 4 - ePartners Career Connection Event - 10 am
- 2:30 PM in EB2. CSC Faculty / Staff News Congratulations to CSC faculty, Drs. George Rouskas and Rudra Dutta, and former PhD student, Bensong Chen, for receiving the "best paper" award at the Communication Systems, Networks and Digital Signal Processing 2006 (CSNDSP 2006) conference held July 19-21 at the University of Patras in Patras, Greece. More Congratulations to Dr. Annie Antón, who is among 80 of the nation's brightest and gifted young engineers selected to participate in the 12th annual U.S. Frontiers of Engineering Symposium. More Antón will also be recognized at the 2006 IEEE International Requirements Engineering Conference (or RE'06) for a paper she published at the annual conference in 1996. more Congratulations to Susan Peaslee and Michelle Healey for being selected as "Pride of the Wolfpack Award" winners for the College of Engineering in June. The CSC Office of Graduate Programs is very pleased to welcome Dare Cook, who has joined the department as our new Graduate Admissions Specialist and Counselor. More It is with mixed emotions that we announce the departure of visiting lecturer, Jason Schwarz, effective August 4th. Schwarz has accepted a promotion at MSC, his primary employer, which will require significantly more travel. For years, Schwarz has taught hundreds and hundreds of CSC students, and his departure will leave a deep void. We wish him the very best in his new role. We are saddened to report the passing of alumnus and former CSC instructor, Carl "Chuck" Grad (BS '73). He was one of the department's earliest graduates, and went on to pursue his graduate studies at Northwestern University. Grad was an entrepreneur, a business owner and a specialist in the telecommunication field. He was employed with Alcatel for many years and later served as a consultant.
