Meneely Wins ACM Student Research Competition

Andy Meneely, a doctoral candidate in the Computer Science Department at NC State University, won first place the poster and presentation portion of the ACM Student Research Competition at the 41st ACM Technical Symposium on Computer Science Education (SIGCSE 2010). He is now eligible to participate in the ACM Student Research Competition Grand Finals in the coming months. more

Shores Receives Prestigious NSF Graduate Research Fellowship

Fellows benefit from three years of funding (approximately $122,500) for research-focused degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields. more

Safety Sweep

Driving next to an 18-wheeler during a rainstorm last year, Kathryn Asad found herself in a dangerous situation. The rainwater sprayed up by the truck’s tires created a thick fog around her car, obscuring the road. She made it home safely but decided to figure out a way to minimize the risk. Fortunately, Asad was in the perfect place to turn a challenging problem into an elegant solution. more

Ralph (Benny) E. Suggs, Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy (ret.) and general manager of the Harley Owners Group (HOG) and Rider Services at Harley-Davidson Motor Company, has been named Executive Director of the North Carolina State University Alumni Association, Vice Chancellor Nevin Kessler, announced on April 29th. more

New Research Offers Security For Virtualization, Cloud Computing

Dr. Xuxian Jiang and Ph.D. student Zhi Wang have developed new techniques and software that may be the key to resolving those security concerns and boosting confidence in the sector. more

NC State Engineering Hosts Reception for High-school Robotics Competition

The College of Engineering at North Carolina State University hosted about 1,000 students, parents, judges and staff at the inaugural NCFIRST Robotics Regional Competition reception on Friday, April 2. The reception, held at Engineering Building II on Centennial Campus, was part of a weekend of competition in which high school students showed off their robotic know-how. more

Martin-Vega Honored with Orthogonal Medal

Dr. Louis A. Martin-Vega, dean of the College of Engineering at North Carolina State University, has been honored with the Orthogonal Medal for Distinguished Service in Graphic Science by the university’s graphic communications faculty. more

Heil Receives NC State Outstanding Teacher Award

Dr. Tao Xie has been awarded $50,000 by the National Institute of Standards and Technology to support his research proposal titled “Access Control Policy Tool for Privilege Management and Data-Level Access Control Pilot.more

Drs. Vince Freeh, Xiaosong Ma, Frank Mueller, Xiaohui (Helen) Gu and Xuxian Jiang have been awarded $549,999 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support their collaborative research titled “A Root Cluster for Systems Research into Scalable Computing.” more
